Graziers get under the doona
(Thursday, 10 April 2014 - ABC News)

About 100 graziers gathered in Mackay Queensland yesterday, for the annual grazing forum, this year titled “Under the Beef Cow Doona and Beyond”.

Fertility and reproduction were key topics for graziers from the Mackay , Whitsunday and Isaac regions, who also heard information on bovine dung beetles and soil health.

Regional Landcare facilitator for Reef Catchments and forum coordinator Johnelle Stevens says organisers want to continue to deliver information to the region.

"We can have more forums and information getting to these graziers that don't have a lot of on-ground technical experts in this area."

Research coordinator for animal production in northern Australia, MLA, Geoff Neithe says improving production and decreasing costs, are two focus areas.

He sent a strong message that people need to identify fertility traits in bulls that breed more fertile cows.

"If you've paid a lot of money for a bull and he came out of a cow that's only had a calf every second year, you're probably driving your fertility backwards."

Graziers Sharon and Rodney Dallas say they need to produce more beef to offset the low price it receives.

They are paying attention to their soils.

"Improving quality of our soil so that the grass has better nutrient quality."
